Low Proximity (Backshelf) Exhaust Hoods
The Backshelf Hood is good for kitchens that does not have the normal ceiling to floor dimension.
Overview
Low Proximity hoods are canopy hoods that have been specially designed for installation at low proximity to your cooking equipment. Most low proximity hoods hang anywhere from 72” above the finished floor (AFF) all the way down to just 6” above your cooking equipment. This style hood system has become increasingly popular in the food truck and concession industry where the kitchen space and overhead space is limited.
Applications
- Commercial kitchens- low proximity exhaust hoods are commonly installed in commercial restaurants residing in older construction, high rise buildings, historical buildings, and anywhere overhead space is limited.
- Food trucks/Mobile Kitchens- low proximity hoods are most commonly used in Food Trucks and other Mobile Kitchens. This is due to the very low ceiling height and lack of space to run ductwork and other mechanicals. Some models also offer additional shelving via the top of the hood.
- Concession –Typically found at your local stadium or ballpark, the concession stand is the favorite stop for most sports venue visitors. With a limited amount of space inside the low proximity, the hood is a great solution to controlling the grease vapors from hot dogs, hamburgers, nachos, and more.
Benefits
The most obvious benefit to low proximity hoods is the space savings acquired from both the smaller hood profile as well as the lower installation height. The less obvious benefit to low proximity hoods is their ability to run at significantly lower air volumes. Due to their close proximity to the cooking equipment, the low proximity hood can achieve airflow rates as low as 100cfm/ft.
